Members of the Garden Club of Madison planted purple and yellow pansies and pulled weeds on the island at Waverly Place in the warm weather Thursday afternoon.

Club President Ruth Kerkeslager and members Christine Hammitt and Barbara Carey did the gardening.

They said the pansies are cool weather plants meant for early spring. Other plants, such as grasses, would take their place toward the end of May.

The Garden Club of Madison, founded in 1922, also tends to gardens at the east entrance to Madison, Rose Garden Park, Mary McDaniel Memorial Garden at Niles Park and some of the borough's summer hanging plants, they said.
