Accused Ring Bandit Charged in Randolph package thefts

A Dover man who is charged with swiping or trying to rob three women of their wedding and engagement rings in parking lots has now been accused of stealing packages containing laboratory equipment in Randolph.

Christian G. Rivera, a 27-year-old who was released from state prison in December, has been served at the Morris County Jail with criminal complaints that allege he removed three packages from a woman’s front porch in Randolph on March 15.

Randolph police Lt. Christopher Giuliani said Tuesday that a detective had pinned Rivera as a suspect in the package removal and was prepared to sign complaints against him when Rivera, coincidentally, was arrested April 25 on charges of robbing three women between April 18 and 25.

The pilfered packages taken in March contained about $3,000 worth of laboratory research equipment — nothing hazardous — that the recipient intended to bring to her place of employment, Giuliani said.

Rivera was held in lieu of $650,000 and the new complaints charging theft by unlawful taking raise the bail by $25,000.

Rivera he served time for aiding and abetting a kidnapping in Bergen County.

He also has nine prior felony convictions for crimes such as burglary, theft and assault, according to records and a Morris County assistant prosecutor.

He was apprehended in Denville on April 25 after he allegedly fled a robbery outside the ShopRite at the Roxbury Mall, where a woman had a gun pointed at her and her engagement ring wrenched off her finger, police said.

On April 18, Rivera allegedly approached a woman in a parking lot in Rockaway Township and forced her at gunpoint to give him her wedding ring valued at $10,000.

On April 24, Rivera pointed a fake gun at a woman and demanded her wedding and engagement rings outside the Wharton ShopRite but she refused, police have said, and Rivera fled when she persisted in keeping a shopping cart between the thief and herself.
